29th As I was answering Julies boy’s questions we were watching a show called Nitro Cirus which is a look into my crazy soul and there they were at the cliffs on the local side where I had jumped at my brothers wedding and my stent living with a rasta named Natty and then and the end of there jumps the sat with a guy I had hung with for a day when I biked the town on this flat tired dirt bike. It warmed my heart and made me itch for more. I even checked on a girl from lithawainia that I had sent to natty months ago and as I though had a blast like me. I will dive into that story one day but it was so cool seeing where I had once treaded and my i say even though I did not have a huge ramp to jump off I did jump into much ruffer waters. April 21st -24th I know what I am doing in Portland
So I know you all must be wondering why the entry is so soon – I must be flying, but in actuality I am still here in this magical working city of Portland, Oregon. I am amazed everyday of how functioning this place is and I have been up to so much. April 21st Portland, Oregon Today turned out to be a day fun of self adventure and fun. After I wrote the last entry I went out to the city and got lost with myself. I think this is a good thing to do because you expose yourself and through your vulnerability you can let your guard down and really let the city set in. I first went to get a new short hand journal because of the loss of the last one. (This was good because like buying anything new, you begin to use it the most in the beginning and then the novelty wears off. It is funny how we can value something so highly in the beginning and then get so tired of it in the end.) The funny thing is only after a few days I was seeing people I already knew. There is such a need to get out and around in this city that I was running back into the same people. Plus the kindness had them actually talking to me – which in most cities just fails to happen. I then went down to the bike shop that helped me plan my route over to the state of Washington which is just a bridge away. This was nice because I thought about riding the freeway which I soon found out was not at all my only out … [Read more...]
April 18th-21st Oh, Portland
M an, oh, man! Where do I begin? It has only been a few days. April 18th Portland, OR I left Newport, Oregon with a sense of energy in my toes. I thought I had a 150 mile day and I was so excited. I was to get into Portland that evening. I made myself a breakfast and chatted with Julie till about nine. It was a little later then I had planned to leave, but plans are for those that are not really traveling but visiting and it’s just not my style. No matter what the time is – a good conversation is still a good conversation. Time truly is funny that way. It dictates our judgments and I just don’t have my own time for it – ha. The weather was prime for a long ride. The coast remained beautiful and it was like a slow slide show through more tourist towns until I finally turned east and moved my way toward this “magical place” everybody in the past said I would love. It was also cool to think about how that was the last time I would ever be moving west again. I really know I am on my way back home – just got a few stops before I get there. Right at the point you turn east is also the 45th parallel which is exactly half way between the equator and the north pole. I climbed one small hill after following a river for awhile. The funny thing was as I have learned from the past that the wind comes from the west 90 percent of the time. Today it came from the east but not nearly as forceful as … [Read more...]
April 4th – 17th, 2009
April 4th- 17th San Francisco, CA to Newport, OR Thanks to everyone generously supporting me along the journey! I would like to first start off with a realization that I have that has helped me out a lot. Fighting with Mother Nature is like fighting with a wife or girlfriend. The more you go at it, the worst it gets and Mother Nature still wins, so it is best to just shut up and go with it from the start. April 4th thru 7th San Francisco, CA I had to blend these together because my trip to San Fran was a blur. I came in on the weekend, so it was very overwhelming from the start. San Fran is very small city with a lot of people and on the weekends a lot more tourists. It is about 7miles by 7 miles and when I pedaled in, I was struck by the masses of people from the start. It was full of beggars, youth and tourists – it just really took me by surprise. It was hard coming from beautiful greenery to people on top of people. It was like a petri dish of bacteria that just would not grow outside the dish. On the 4th it was a nice ride, but about 7 miles before I was in the city, I broke another spoke and decided if there was ever a time to rebuild my wheel San Fran would be the place with all the commuters and hills. A funny thing happened in the morning though – coming into San Fran I saw Becky’s sister Rye randomly on the road about to have lunch. She waved me down and was so kind. I must say because of San Fran size it does have an amazing … [Read more...]
Note: additional thoughts of April 3rd drive through mountains
NOTE AN ADDITION TO APRIL 3rd DRIVE THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS: All the experiences and wonderful people that I have met have connected today during the ride through the Santa Cruz and San Jose mountains with Chris. I saw a song on his cd called BE NATTY. Natty was a Rastafarian I got the joy to live with in Jamaica for a week and taught me a lot about being in the present and not worrying about anything else. Of course I asked to hear this song because of the name but it opened so many doors when I heard it sung. NATTY means be Natural And True To Yourself. This in itself is moving, but I think it is just the underlying key to one’s happiness and serenity. I know that many of my thoughts are sometimes hard to merge but this one word means everything and describes everyone I have met. Knowing who you are and loving it makes it impossible to have things come in between that. There are many things in all of our lives that are bumps but as long as you are “NATTY” everything else falls into place. There is just so much in this simple statement that almost makes it complex. It is like the simplicity behind rope yet complex when holding weight. It is an exciting time in our lives and there is a shift happening between those that are true and willing to flow with change and those that control things and are not willing to change. The water is flowing and some can’t wait to swim while others miss the boat. I am so happy to have met the thoughtful and … [Read more...]
March 29th – April 2nd
March 29th-April 2nd I love how long Cali is March 29th Morro Bay, CA to Big Sur, CA I must say that the desire to stay in each of these wonderful places is growing more and more. Cali is just such a cool place and the small towns have such a community that you just want to be a part of it. Still, Monika had another surfer coming that day, so it was nature’s way to tell me that there was another situation that it wanted to show me. Plus I had called Peter in Pacific Grove. He happened to be a teacher and wanted me to come talk to his class. I left around 10am just because it was a Sunday and I did not need to be in Pacific Grove till Monday. The fog was thick and a chill was in the air. I am guessing that it is the ocean water that makes this so. I must say the ride was beautiful. This one stays true to the coast and the hills were breath taking. It being spring makes the colors just glow and you can feel this life just begin to blossom all around you. The flowers and animals are all waking and the peace within and all around are just over whelming. I took my time moving up because the wind was so strong and stopped pretty fast for lunch. I stopped along a beach that had hundreds of elephant seals tanning in the sun. I have heard that a little earlier there are just thousands of them, then they birth and right now the parents move on and the babies are left to learn on their own. It is true we are all born with the knowledge of how to live, … [Read more...]
